What We Believe
We take as our doctrinal statement the Westminster Confession of Faith and catechisms. These are available here through our denominational website. A word of background regarding these documents and our denomination:
The Reformation of the church began in the 16th century in Germany. Later reformers built upon this foundation, leading to the establishment of Reformed churches on the European Continent, and in Great Britain, their close cousin, the Presbyterian Church.
These churches affirm that Christ is the only head of his church and the only means by which we may be saved, that God lovingly and with sovereignty directs all things, that the Scriptures authoritatively address all matters of life and faith, and that God has maintained his promises to his people throughout all time.
In the mid-1600s, the English church decided it needed a definitive statement of faith. The Westminster Assembly met from 1643 to 1649 and drafted the Westminster Confession of Faith and its Larger and Shorter Catechisms. The Bible being the word of God prescribes our faith. The Westminster documents, by contrast, describe what we believe the Bible teaches.
